THE DANCE LAB – Dance Education for Primary Schools

Dance Lab founder, Robyn Parras has 11 years teaching experience as a dance teacher and primary school teacher. The Dance Lab – Dance Education for Primary Schools by Rock the Block Dance was founded in 2008 and has been running through numerous schools in both NSW and ACT over this time. Our In School Dance Program keeps students fit and healthy and promotes wellbeing in a positive and encouraging environment. Our program allows children to express themselves through music and movement within different contexts that assist in building self confidence. Our program has been carefully choreographed to suit both boys and girls within each stage. Our In School dance program has been written to suit the Australian Curriculum in the PD/H/PE strand –Movement and Physical Activity

Sub Strands:

– Moving Our Body

– Understanding Movement

– Learning Through Movement

Our program is highly engaging and lots of fun! It encourages positive self-esteem and elevates children’s confidence levels. The children are taught 4 to 5 dances over the school term in different dance styles such as Folk, Bush, creative, Indigenous, Latin, Rock ‘ n’ Roll, Disco, Line dancing and Contemporary Hip Hop. All our music is new and relatable to the children which captures their attention the instant our program starts. At the end of the program we assess the children in accordance to the outcomes and indicators of the syllabus. We can also put together a school concert to display the children’s dance routines to parents and the conclusion of the program.

What a great decision to choose Dance Lab to implement our school dance program! They provided a vibrant, relevant program, which was linked to the curriculum and fully assessed. Robyn was professional yet friendly and easy to work with. Her rapport with the students was fantastic – equal parts fun and firm meaning time was always used productively.  Robyn provided different dances for each year group and had them stage ready come presentation night. The teachers loved the ease of the program and the kids just loved participating. We will definitely be using Dance Lab next year and beyond.

St Bede’s Primary School

St Bede’s Primary School of Red Hill in ACT has been involved with the Rock the Block Dance program for Primary Schools since 2009. During this time we have found Robyn Parras to be very professional, organised as well as providing energetic dance lessons for students of different ages.

Each year, Robyn Parras and her team provide an in-school dance program for all primary year levels that is both aligned to curriculum and an enjoyable experience for all the students. The dances are not only inclusive by catering for all abilities but use up to date music which the children love listening to as they move.

Our parents love the dance performance at the end of the program and the students certainly enjoy presenting all they have learnt throughout the term. We thoroughly recommend this program to other schools as an accessible and highly effective way for all children to be involved in dance.

“I have had the pleasure of working with Robyn and her team of highly professional and enthusiastic choreographers for about six years now. Every year Robyn aligns the program with curriculum and devises and delivers an engaging and age-appropriate dance program, that changes each year. Even the most reluctant participants are gently encouraged to find their dancing feet! Robyn always offers the option of a performance at the end of the unit so that the other school students and parents can be invited along to enjoy the routines that the students have been learning. Her prices are very accessible to all students and overall I cannot recommend the program highly enough”
